Post 1 - Initial Ideas

Post 4 - Song Annotation

Flying, climbing,
This is what I feel when I'm reverse skydiving,
Neptune, shining,
Frying all the elements as they're combining,
Rewind, timing,
This be the contract for sky I'll be signing,
No concern for wining or dining,
Wind so blue that it might be blinding,
All that I know is I won't be minding

You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me

Flying, climbing,
Giving me a smile, that's the inverse of crying
Upwards, mining
My dress seems like a ruby and the stars be aligning
Sky that's shining
Angles that I'm turning on continue refining
No concern for eyes that are prying
Spell my name with lighting and keep rewinding
All that I know is I won't be minding

You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me

Flying, climbing,
This is what I feel when I'm reverse skydiving,
Neptune, shining,
Frying all the elements as they're combining,
Rewind, timing,
This be the contract for sky I'll be signing,
No concern for wining or dining,
Wind so blue that it might be blinding,
All that I know is I won't be minding

You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me
You don't have to jump to fly with me

I believe this song 'Reverse Sky-diving' in my opinion is about a girl either going through her daily routine that she does every single day, or that she is on drugs or that this could possibly be an imagination or a dream that she is having. What suggests this is the lyric 'frying all the elements as they're combining'. This lyric/line could suggest the first opinion of the song about a girl doing her daily work every single day and that she cant wait till the night. The word that suggests this is 'frying' as it sounds like she wants to merge and cook together quickly all the bad and depressing things in the day and wait for the night to come. A lyric that finishes that story of is 'all that i know is i wont be minding' as this line says that she doesnt mind whatever she does in the day doesnt matter, as long as she's got the night so she doesnt mind all the daily things she has to do. However, what could suggest my other opinion is the dream/imagination/drugs is that whole lyric title 'reverse sky-diving' as no one can reverse sky dive, as it's impossible. So it could make the listeners realise that she is dreaming this or her imagination is playing with her mind. What could indicate that she is on drugs is the lyric 'wind so blue that it might be blinding' as sometimes when your on drugs they can make you hallucinate and see different objects and colours, so the bright colours from the drugs is blinding her. This song has so many different interpretations that could all be created in this music video.

Post 3 - Song Details

Hot Natured ft Anabel Englund - Reverse Skydiving (Shadow Chid Remix)

Our song choice for our House music video is the song Reverse Skydiving (shadow child remix) by Hot Natured featuring Anabel Englund. We chose this song for our chosen music video genre because it has a great house music beat that starts off the song that's throughout. After then it additionally has a breakdown at 1:34 in the music that brings a climax to the song. Also, it effectively has the singer Anabel Englund singing through out from 0:40 with meaningful lyrics. This has been edited throughout though as there is some echoes in her voice at the beginning and throughout, and it sounds like some parts have been repeated and edited. The song is about about a romance she is having with someone and how she feels about that guy when she's with him. This uses mesmerising connatations with sexual references towards the guy. However, from when i heard the song and saw the lyrics, the story that she is telling is like a memory, imagination or a story from being on drugs especially with the way she is singing the song and the type of lyrics. The genre of this music video especially for the remix of the song comes under the genre house music. This is because of the type of lyrics she is singing, the beat and drop of beat to make the climax in the song because it sounds like the song would be in a club which is very conventional of house music and their music videos.

Post 2 - Roles in Music Video

Roles for House Music Video on Make A Gif

This gif explains to everyone the different roles everyone has in the group and what they are going to be contributing towards the group to make the music video a success. So as you can see Jacob is going to be our director and in charge of lighting and sound as we all agreed he would best to help make this music video and would give the best decisions for the music video, especially for all the ideas he has thought of so far for specifically house music. George is going to be doing a joint role of camera shots, which therefore indicates that him and Jacob can both contribute different shot ideas which will make the music video stand out and effective. We thought that Rae should be the performer for this music because she would suit this role for this singer very well as she knows the genre well and help think of different ideas for what she could do in the music video. She is also joint doing mise en scene with me, so this is where we can put in ideas about how the way the performer looks, where it should be set and the character should be doing etc. I believe all the roles given are very good and suit every person in our group, and everyone will do really well in thinking of different ideas for their section in our house music video.

Most people when asking the questions to liked house music, which is helpful for our survey as we are focusing on House music, however more of the older people didnt know much of house music. Furthermore, from the last pie chart you can see that there was a whole mixture of ways that people have heard of house music, there wasnt just one particular way.

Post 11 - Genre Research 2

Swedish House Mafia ft Tinie Tempah - Miami 2 Ibiza

Media presentation house music from megmogx

Steve Angello & Laidback Luke ft Robin S - Show Me Love

I chose to do Show Me Love because it replicates all the conventions of a house music video. Also as it's more of an older style song, you can still see the conventions there but portrayed in a different way. Firstly, the mise en scene in this music video is very typical of 80's house music video as it uses all the bright colours in their costume and in the animated setting. However, there is no setting change which is typical in house music videos as they normally show people dancing in a club, so technically it's the same but with an animated background that's the same throughout. The background and costumes help symbolise and show the era of the 80's and what the outfits were like, and where all the bright colours come from in the outfits and the background.

The next tube chop shows the editing in the 80's music video Show Me Love. It's very different to the music videos now a days as they use very modern editing to make and show the conventions. However, this music video does the same but in a different way. Firstly, the whole setting throughout uses a bright purple stripey background, which could resemble the 80's style and the bright colours could show the dancing atmosphere and that it's good song to dance to. Furthermore, it uses a fake stereo which helps fit in with the strong dancey beats to the music, right from the beginning and all the way throughout. Also at the beginning where the women is singing, the lyrics are presented on screen coming from the womens mouth, but in an actual 80's style music text that is very famous.

The next tube chop represents the camerawork and cinematography that is used in this music video. They use a mixture of camera shots, but they are all pretty much the same as normal music videos for any genre. For example, there is one extreme close up of the women singing the words, but does a side extreme shot just to show part of her face singing it. Additionally, they use a lot of long shots. This is because it's house music they have to show people dancing, but in this video its just single girls dancing which is very typical of house music videos because it shows the audience that the song is very popular.

This tub chop next shows the overall performance gives in the music video and to the audience. It's very typical of a house music video with all the females dancing and all the bright colours and no change of setting. Also, its additionally conventional because it has lip synch but not from the main singer but from one of the women in the music videos which is very typical as the DJ's and singers in house music dont really show themselves and would rather get other people to do it to create that reality in the music video. However, the lip synch is very good because it's all in time and very good for someone who is actually not singing to it.

The label offers downloads, offering merchandise, ringtones, 12 purchases on their mainstream and famous web and an ultimate CD.

Additionally, it manages to promote its title and logo/symbol but also manages to show the audience and different artists its website so peope can listen to their type of music and contact them to work with them. The colours stand out and are rememberable when looking at them.
Divisions & Parent Company: Tolroom Records is in an individual and independant record label that established itself in 2003 on its own from the famous house music artist Mark Knight, who therefore managed to get the label famous from his unique and trendsetting music.
History: Toolroom Records has set the standards very high with major house music companies as they are known to be one of the most controversial and respected dance labels of all time. They have a lot of sub labels that are very mainstream and known about, a tour packaged, a DJ-led compilation brand and 10 full and strong hard workers who make the record label famous and different to others.
Why it's suitable: I think this record label is suitable for our project because its very stylish and modern and it has done very well in the house music industry, therefore it would show our music video to be one of the top ones in the music industry. Also, it shows the record label to be very dependable as it advertises its own website on the front of the logo.

405 Recordings
Year Establishment: 2005
Location: 405 Recordings headquarters for this particular record label is Melbourne, Austrailia.
Artists: James Brooke is the artist who runs 405 Recordings and has been an Austrailian DJ and radio host for many years. He was the one who managed to head up the new label and make it go out into the world where people could listen to the types of music that he has created and established.
Promotional Material: 405 recordings has managed to make their record label famous because of the leader and founder of it James Brooke. He has managed to create different and unique music and has managed to get the company involved in different downloaded bases so people and artists find the company. For example, iTunes, Beatport, Juno, Bigpond etc. Getting involved with these downloadable bases makes the company more well known.
Logo: The logo is very simple but trendy, and is set out to be rememberable from the name and the little symbol next to it. The symbol helps as a lot of companies use black and white for the colour, but the symbol makes it different to others and rememberable. Additionally, as the name is so simple it helps artists and managers to remember it.
Divisions & Parent Company: 405 Recordings is an independant record label as it was founded by James Brooke, a famous radio host and DJ artist. As he is quite famous, he has managed to get famous and local artists in Austrailia to perform and record famous songs on it e.g. Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Trent McDermott etc. This therefore helps his record label to get more out there.
History: 405 Recordings is based on house music but in particular releasing quality underground sounds and trance and progressive music. It manages to sell through the biggest downloading companies. The company manages to build and improve artists on both a local and international view. James Brooke, the leader of it has used his own years of experience to create and progress this famous record label.
Why it's suitable: I think this record label is suitable because it's very in with the modern style. It's very modern and looks like a good record label which then makes it very catchy to music artists. Also i think its suitable because from the list of artists, most of them are famous which helps make it look more like a famous music company.

New City Sound
Year Establishment:
Location: New City Sound was established in the South West Region in the UK.
Artists: This record label has managed to give many artists a chance to perform live at gigs and get signed and well known by many different managers to show their talent and produce their songs. Examples of these artists are Shapeshifters, Junior Jack, Soul Central, KKKlass etc. These all are now very well known artists that have got far because of this record label.
Promotional Material: To make the record label famous and out there they offer a huge amount of success in the business. Unfound artists that sign up to it are offered a signed track that will be beneficial in the music world as it will make it big internationally, artists have oppurtunites to premier their songs and new mixes that they can write and create, they have a mixture of bases in different countries but the main and head one is in the UK, but that means your able to tour easy and confidently with the help of them and they post your music on the internet to get managers to find you and choose you to perform or be a part of something musically.
Logo: The logo allows the artist to remember it very easily from the bold colours being used and the symbol in the corner. It stands out from many other different record labels, which means in the music world in the UK it stands out from other different UK labels, also meaning that they know their music industry very well.
Divisions & Parent Company: New City Sound was established and respected by the 'House' music producers, promoters and managers. They believed that this UK company had potential to get good artists to sign on to them, especially in the house style of music. Positively, NCS has been offered a new record label to produce their music through a new label and changing the whole outline of it to make it even more better. The company overall is being decorated to make it look better.
History: This record label being connected with different head music producers and promoters has made it famous and has got many people to do gigs to outline and promote this music label. Effectively, it has managed to sign every single new artist to get them far in the music world, which is very known of New City Sound record label to make artists more famous.
Why it is suitable: This record label is suitable for our house music video because the red colour is very eye catching, and looks very new and stylish. The capitals make it look more edgy and important, and from all the info from it, it helps solo artists get far in life and get their own record label.

Pst 10 - Moodboard on Genre

This moodboard helps identify the genre of music we chosen - House Music and how they portray their music on their CD covers. As you can see from the covers above, the like to make their covers very different to others and mainly focusing on them. This helps then let the audience know who they are and what they look like. However, some artists e.g. Disclosure dont use a proper picture of them, they use a picture with drawing over them. This could prove that they don't like the publicity as much as other house music artists. The artists like overall a mixture of editing from black and white to a lot of strobe lights in the background behind them.

Post 9 - Andrew Goodwin Theory

Andrew Goodwin wrote the book 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' which identifies three types of music videos that you get in the industry:

Illustration
His first type of music video is called Illustration and when watching these you notice that the videos always cuts on the beat instead of to the beat. The images throughout the music video illustrate the literal meaning and feeling of the lyrics being sung. This is often with the band in the music video and they show them to be singing or playing their instruments in the background.

An example of Illustration is the song 'The Way' by Ariana Grande ft Mac Miller. This first screenshot shows Ariana Grande with Mac Miller and showing Mac Miller to be the band around her but part of the storyline with the different images. This is part of illustration as it includes the other band members and it adds shows the different feelings going on between the singers, including the meaning in the lyrics.

This next screenshot shows the connection the singers have and helps bring up the feelings and emotions in this music video which is typical of illustration as thats what Andrew Goodwin believed summed up Illustration. This screenshot shows there is a storyline through the lyrics in this song, and there is a connection through the lyrics and through the music video.

Amplification
The next type of music video Andrew Goodwin identified was Amplification. This style of music video allows the music video to cut on the beat but also emphasise the features as well around it. In the music video, it allows you to see that the images amplify the lyrics throughout meaning they connect together, there is a specific narrative that everyone can understand clearly however the lyrics would not be specifically picked up from the storyline meaning they might not connect together but they have used the storyline to make the song and music video abstract and put a creative idea on theme.
The band in this type of music video take on fictional roles throughout and are part of the storyline to be able to fit and making them part of the concept.

An example of Amplification is the song 'Last Friday Night' by Katy Perry. This first screen shot shows Katy Perry as the main character and showing the storyline throughout. Fortunately these lyrics link with the storyline but they have been presented in a creative way with all the bright colours and the story right at the beginning. The image in this screenshot helps amplify the lyrics being said.

Another example in this music video to show amplification is where the famous saxaphone player is being used as the uncle making the band/musician performing with Katy is being added in creatively and not just being there. It adds more creativity and shows more to the storyline and links to what is happening throughout and he is also referred to 'Uncle Kenny' making him even more involved.

Disjuncture
The last type of music video that Andrew Goodwin has established is Disjuncture. This is where throughout the video the film does not cut on the beat it cuts off the beat and does not follow it throughout however Goodwin has interpreted this as a bad music video as he believes it shows a sign of how bad the music video has been made. In the music video there are images throughout that do not relate to to the lyrics used in the song. The band is portrayed in the music video as just an image that does not even relate to the lyrics or actual music video meaning they are the complete opposite to what is being said.

An example of Disjuncture is in the music video 'Da Funk' by Daft Punk. This screenshot shows the image of the main character which is a dog with a stereo in his arm. This image and character does not relate to the music and does not make sense to the audience. Also this character does not sing or use lip synch throughout and its more like a story than an actual song for a music video.

This next screenshot shows the image of just the dog character again and that the band is not presented throughout. This is shown to be bad of a music video as there is no linkage in the song and it does not introduce us to the band who is singing, which shows possibly that they are not as famous. Also only a couple of characters are used in this but through a storyline not in the actual song through the lyrics.

Low Budget Video 2: Imogen Heap - A-ha

Low Budget Video: The Fix - Just Got Paid

Firstly, this song is very typical of a pop song and uses very pop conventional ideas throughout. However, this song does not have a storyline to it, it just uses different shots of the singers singing in different locations which is still conventional but shows how the low budget version have altered it. This first tube chop shows the opening of the music video and it is very effective especially with the mise en scene as it uses it completely black then 4 lights come on with the harmonies of the voices. Then you see a 5 shadows of each singer and them moving into a different dance move. This is very typical of a pop music video as it has already shown all 5 singers in the band already and has shown the first location/setting they have used to open the music video. This is also particularly good with editing as they have managed to get the lights and movements in time with the singing.

This next tubechop shows the beginning and opening music of the song. This section is effective as it introduces the audience to all of the singers/band members individually and then at the end all of them together. At the same time it starts of with one of the members doing the backing music showing that he is lip synching. This was really good as that backing track to sing is very fast and he was really in time with the music and the pace of the words. Additionally, the camerawork in this tube chop is effective as it uses over the shoulder camera shots that reflect into the mirror so you can see the singers face and body. This also is very conventional of pop music videos as it uses those extreme close ups of each singer looking up, and many music videos use that to introduce the audience to each singer.

This tubechop is very conventional of a pop music video as for the first verse the camera is basically taking control and view of that one singer. But what makes it conventional is that the shots have managed to have a setting change in most of them, an angle change in every single one of them from an extreme close up to a long shot with him and the rest of the band mates & additionally there are a few costume changes in this first verse. Also in this first verse they have shown a connection between the band mates and how all band mates work as a team and show the friendship they have with each other especially if the song doesn't have a storyline.

This tubechop is the section coming towards the end of the song. Its very conventional as it uses a mixture of different shots to show all of them singing and especially the main singer doing all the notes above them. For example they all manage to do a dance section with a long shot angle showing but showing them all in time with each other and all lip synching with each other. At the end of the actual music video the bit of text was all in time and the picture of all them as a boyband is very conventional as most boybands do that to show who they are and show their style. Also the fact that they are always in that particular order in the whole music video is effective as then the viewers watching knows who is who. Furthermore, they manage to show more different setting and costume shots from different angles and made sure still that the singing was in time with each other. The editing also in these shots always alter from one, as the one with the lights shows the viewers their dance moves with the background and the its very neutral whereas the long shots of them in the fancy house shows their style and singing skills.

Analysing a Rock Music Video: Nickelback - How you Remind Me

Monday 8 July 2013

Analysing a Pop Music Video: Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me

This music video is about a girl really in love with her neighbour but doesn't have the confidence to tell him as firstly he has a girlfriend and secondly he's much popular than her, and from her lyrics "you belong with me" it shows that she really likes him and knows that it's meant to be. This typical of a pop music video as it uses the topics of young teenage love and the usual love story that the popular guy falls for the nerdy girl. Additionally, as she is singing about these topics it makes the song have conventional lyrics. The actual music video itself talks about how typically nerdy characters always love the popular characters and can either get the popular character or not, but in this song its made it out to be like a fairytale ending.
This music video is a promotional video for Taylor Swift as it shows her being the main characters (except for the guy) but the popular girl and nerdy girl throughout the whole music video. Additionally, it shows her singing the song throughout as her nerdy character while the popular character is only for acting, as the nerdy character is the main character. Overall, this shows that Taylor Swift can act and multi-roll as different characters, but also shows that she was a big part in making the song and lyrics as it shows the topic is quite important to her because it matches the lyrics that she wrote for it. This music video fits into the pop genre as it uses bright colours, bright and story telling lyrics and makes the audience want to sing a long to it and watch the video to wonder what the song is about.
